Every student is required to explore distinctive change between old architecture design with what we have in the present.

One of the distinctive change in old architecture design and new architecture design is the material used to build the building. For old buildings like Pyramid of Giza, the material used is brick. This is because brick can be made easily by hand under hot and dry weather. Besides,  brick is also compact and hard thus strong enough to hold the big structure in place and in shape. Whereas, modern skyscapers like ‘The Gherkin” of London, the combination of steels, reinforced concrete and glass are being used as a support system of the skyscaper. Combination of materials used made the structure stronger, save cost and enhance easthetic value of the building.

Apart from that, the difference in technology used in construction in different time also influence architecture design of the building. For example, like during olden Egyptian civilization, only bricks can be made using bare hand and mud, and shaped by using standard template, then heat it under high temperature. Bricks are then ‘connected’ to each other by using mud mix well with water (mortar). Due to fast-paced development of technology nowadays, various techniques and materials are well explored thus smoothen the construction process within a short period of time. The new technology used in construction can further aid in the comfortability within the building to suit the users, as well as enhancing the beauty of the building.

Pyramid of Giza has triangular form which is a simple geometrical shape. This is because during the olden days, when there is less methods and technologies, stability of the building has became the main focus of the builders of that time. In order to ensure the building is stable and can stand over a long period of time without collapsing, most of the buildings are designed with a narrower top and wider bottom area, thus pyramidal shape (classical type) is the only choice at that time. On the other hand, ‘The Gherkin’ has a more dynamic and curve shape. This is due to the advancement of the lastest technology, even the skyscapers that stand high can have a dynamic and curvy shape and stand strong, thus increases the choices and varieties of design for new generations which lead to the birth of futurelistic design.

Besides, the pyramid of Giza is out of proportion, where the building is a lot higher than normal human height. This is because in the olden days, the great building is build only to show the greatness of god of certain civilization as well as act as an important landmark of that place. Thus, the bigger the building is, the greater power of god is to human. Whereas, ‘The Gherkin’ is built based on proper human scale. The standard spaces inside it like offices, rooms, toilets, halls are well-measured and planned to suit man-kind, hence the spaces are convinience for use. Thus, there is no wastage of spaces within ‘The Gherkin’.

In conclusion, the difference between the olden architecture and new one are: type of materials used, variety of technologies used, the form of building ( classical vs futurelistic), as well as proportion of the building to human height.

The distintive changes of old architecture design with what we have in present – Baroque style

Baroque is an artistic style that was present mainly in Europe from the late 16th century until the early 18th century. The Baroque is considered to be the dominant style of art in Europe between the Mannerist and Rococo eras and it is characterized by overt emotion, dynamic movement and self-confident rhetoric.

The changes from old to what we have in present

At the present, our architecture is coming to a modern style which the design keep to be simple and clean. The beautiful ornaments and decoration is replace by the simplicity in form and design. Modern architecture is typically free of clutter and unnecessary elements. The focus of modern design will be on the space itself, rather than on any decor or details not relevant to the overall design. Modern tastes enjoy simplicity and clarity. Homes will be clean, functional, and simple.

Even though our architecture style now a day remain to be simple and clean, strongly belive in the idea of "less is more", but Baroque art and architecture which is extravagant in concept, exuberant in spirit, elaborate in detail has continued to stir us with its vitality and dynamism, its mood of barely suppressed passion. The Baroque spirit still lives today to inspire us in different domain.

Baroque style in modern home design

The Baroque style is still used today as inspiration when it comes to decorating a home in a rich manner. This style is well known for being dramatic and opulent, characteristics which can transform a simple home into something flamboyant.

Many people choose to decorate their living space with a baroque style, and there are a variety of ideas that you can incorporate; ideas like using baroque style patterns to enrich cushion covers, linen, upholstery, curtaining and much more!

Baroque style in modern Graphic Design

Now graphic artists can add Baroque flair to almost any design project with elements like lush florals, rosettes as a repeating motif in a frieze and many more ornaments with a clear Baroque influence. Baroque designs can be used by artists to enhance various items, because the ornaments specific to this style have the great capacity of making an art work look richer.

Baroque style in modern Fashion design

In conclusion, It’s not an unknown fact that often in modern graphic design the inspiration comes from art styles from the past. If you have the right skills, you can combine past and present design and create amazing modern art work. The Baroque Style is represented by beautiful and rich decorations that can perfectly combine with the styles designers who love to ornate their work with flowers and swirls.

Characteristics of the Baroque Style

Baroque Style evolved from the classic forms of the Renaissance, but it differs by new details and trends: colossal buildings as proportions with dramatic appearance, pompous facades with gables modified in various means, double towers, tall and unshapely domes, annex buildings with beautiful ornaments, windows with irregular forms.

1 distinctive change between old architecture design and the present.

From my thought of the old & new architecture in this 21st century is to define the futuristic and culturistic architecture. It's the high technologies use and the consideration of the human being in their architecture life. It's not just about the history of the building memory, history of the material use, the architecture style use and the method of the architecture development such like construction and conceptual design.

The futuristic architecture is an artistic movement to the early 20 century who rejected the traditional aesthetics and tried to glorify contemporary life. A cult of the machine age, even glorification of war and violence were among the themes of the futurists. The other expression is the motion of the building itself and to representative the urban sustainability use for the architecture environments. Some people are saying this is the modern architecture but for me, I might take it be old architecture. It's not hand sketches and hand drawn about the detailing. It's all use the digital computer to figuring out the amazing work about the future architecture environment look like even though the architecture model now be built by the high technologies 3D printing and it's not traditional construction method. From futuristic architecture visualization can refer from the parametric design by rhino grasshopper, evolo design, Zaha hadid design...etc.

The other hand, culturistic architecture is about the environment culture related to human, nature and building itself. Perhaps the most well known line from Adolf Loos's famous essay "Ornament and Crime" is the claim that, As ornament is no longer organically related to our culture, it is also no longer the expression of our culture. Its' move in culture of modernity. Disregarding uses of the word for such notions as cultivation (of crops), development of intellectual faculties (as in a cultured man) or acquaintance with and taste in the arts (as in centers or ministers of culture), there remain those understandings which may be considered relevant within the context of this study. totality of "ways of life, symbols, meanings, cognitive schemata, and adaptive strategies" that forms culture. With this approach, culture should be understood as a human essence by which human groups may be differentiated, be they tribes, religious communities, companies, professions or others. It's can be presented in paper work, the areas of study which have remained untouched and the scope within which such studies should be examined and criticized.

Culturistic architecture is like a movement from the futuristic architecture but it's more functionality and more respond to the environment/ consideration of human needs. For my observation no architecture visualization is old and new and It's about the memories and inspiration work in their architecture period.  Architecture is work on environments and is to appreciate the responding of the culture.

OLD  AND  NEW  ARCHITECTURE

The distintive changes of old architecture design with what we have in present

Houses have changed a lot over the last three hundred years. Availability of construction materials, development of indoor plumbing and heating systems, advances in architecture, governmental incentives, technology, family size, and a general rise in living standards are a few of the factors that have played a role in the evolution of our homes. These changes have, in turn, changed and shaped family and social relationships. More personal privacy and space have become a reality.

-MODERN House AND  COMTEMPoRARY HOUSE-

During the 19th century, different functions of the house were compartmentalized into separate areas. Public and private rooms were kept apart. As with most other rooms, the bedroom was largely an invention of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Until then, all but the most privileged colonists lived in one or two rooms, and beds stood throughout their homes when not in use.

Modern recalls the early- and mid-20th-century architecture embodying the ideals of the machine age: an absence of ornament, structures of steel or concrete, large expanses of glass, a whitewash (usually stucco over brick) or another minimal exterior expression, and open floor plans.

MODERN HOUSE
COMTEMPORARY HOUSE

Contemporary architecture is a broad and constantly changing category, since it reflects what a variety of architects are creating today. However, Contemporary style homes have a distinctive feel because of the way those architects have built on the Modern style that broke from traditional architectural models. Contemporary house design integrates a wide number of style features. It melds historic elements with current lifestyle concepts resulting in homes that are warm, inviting and connected with the outdoors. The Contemporary style grew out of Modern architecture, which arose with the Industrial Revolution of the early 20th century.Modern home style is marked by simple, clean lines; the idea that “form follows function”; and the use of what were then newly available building materials (iron, steel and sheet glass).More and more Contemporary houses are being designed with eco-friendly materials and features. Bamboo, a sustainable material, is often sourced for floors, and attractive natural granite is popular for countertops.

"Contemporary" is the architecture being produced now, the architecture of the moment.

"Modern" architecture breaks with the past — specifically the traditional styles of before the Industrial Revolution.

Is there a difference between the olden architecture and new one?

Absolutely. the difference between modern architecture and contemporaryarchitecture styles are many. Modern architecture styles feature the use of materials in a rational way. Contemporary styles of architecture are the evolution of modern architecture, representing today’s styles and design concepts. The terms modern and contemporary architecture are used interchangeably but are not the same. Both modern and contemporary architecture are discussed in more detail below.

MODERN

Modern design and architecture is, for the most part, timeless, classic and iconic. Revisionist in nature, modern vehemently opposed decorative styles; it was – and continues to be – progressive, enlightened and avant-garde. Modern materials consist of steel, concrete, glass and plastic, but they also include wood and varied ‘softer’ materials. In Organic Modernism, complex woodworking techniques were combined with sculptural and organic forms.

CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary – in a literal sense – is not specifically limited to any one particular style, yet it is often attributed to design and architecture deemed fashionable, modish, novel and smart. Rejecting ornamentation and overembellishment, contemporary is then used in the narrowest sense, making reference to design and architecture that refrains from unnecessary decoration and adornment. As such, contemporary is aligned with the parameters of modern but appears topical and may form part of a fad or trend.

Modern architecture incorporates glass windows were walls would traditionally have existed , whitewash or white stucco, and intentional asymmetry. Flat roofs and distinct right angles are inherent in modern architecture as well.

A key component of modern design is its minimalism – using the least to achieve the most. The result is a clutter-free space where attention is placed in the details, whether they be architectural, artistic, or furniture-related.

Perhaps so as to keep the streamlined look and feel of a modern space from feeling clinical, modern style incorporates plenty of natural materials. These include wood, stone, leather, teak, and even linen – all materials that quietly provide warmth and texture to a space without detracting from the overall feel.

For example, the Skyline Residence in Los Angeles uses architectural elements to cut down on direct sunlight and designed with two key objectives – sustainability and budget – which actually worked in favor of one another.

All in all, with those buildings of what we are looking at today is the improvement of what we had in the past. We would have to refer back to those existing to prevent making mistakes and maintain the goodness of it. Good or bad, nice or not, it's already the past. Us, as a future architect should learn how to improve our current environment to a better ones.

Yet the design by Belzberg Architects articulates the horizontal wood planks in a manner that is contemporary: they angle and overlap, giving a feather-like appearance. The form of the house is also quite interesting and the front of the house gives an indication of what is going on: the second-story cantilever creates a carport but also a surface for watching films, something quite LA. This "drive-in theater" represents a hybrid condition: it's a house and a cinema. This further roots the house in a contemporary style rather than a modern one, since the latter preserved distinctions between various aspects of life (live-work-play, etc).
